In the 1960s, Dashrath Manjhi, a poor man lived with his wife, Phaguniya (Radhika Apte), in the remote village of Gehlaur in Bihar, that was cut off from the world by a rocky mountain range. His life was full of struggle and the only blessing in his life was his wife, whom he loved dearly. Dashrath used to work as a labour in the mountains, and Phaguniya used to climb the mountain every day to bring him food. One day she slipped while climbing the mountain. Being severely injured, she died as she couldn’t be taken to the nearby hospital quickly. Being shaken by the tragic incident, a grieving Dashrath decided to carve out a road through the mountain, so that no one else would suffer like he did and the locals could travel faster to the nearby hospital in the town of Wazirganj. It took him 22 years, but he achieved this mammoth task of carving a road out of the mountain all by himself, with just a hammer and a chisel, in the memory of his dead wife. The fellow villagers kept calling him lunatic, but that only strengthened his resolution, and after a hard work of 22 years, Manjhi carved a path 360 feet long, 25 feet deep in places and 30 feet wide. Manjhi died on 17 August 2007 at the age of 73, while suffering from gall bladder cancer in All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), New Delhi. He was given a state funeral by the Government of Bihar.
