Plot Summary of "The Proposal (2009)"

Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is the executive editor-in-chief of a book publishing company, Colden Books, who forces her assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her in order to avoid being deported to Canada. Right from the start we Margaret is portrayed as a witch. She is completely focused on her work and her career, not caring about colleagues below her. She has no family and no friends. Andrew, on the other hand, is a sycophant, sucking up to his boss as a way to advance. His dream is to be an editor like her, and he sees her as his meal ticket. He will do anything, sacrifice time with his family, to make progress in this ambition. Where Margaret is a witch, Andrew is a wimp. But when she tells her bosses that she is marrying him, that is close to the limit. He is ready to opt out of this one until Margaret tells him he will lose his job the minute she is deported and all his efforts will have been in vain.

Andrew grudgingly accepts Margaret's proposal, under the condition that he is promoted to the position of editor and his manuscript be published. When they go to file at the INS office, things get more complicated. The immigration officer smells a rat. He tells them they have 4 days before they must come back for a detailed interview together. In that time self-obsessed Margaret must learn everything about Andrew, who already knows more than he ought about her. The two are forced to spend the weekend with his parents in Sitka, Alaska to celebrate Andrew's grandmother's 90th birthday. The family suggest they could marry the same weekend, and they reluctantly accept. They start to fall genuinely in love as they spend more and more time together. Because of this, during the wedding ceremony, Margaret decides she cannot do this to Andrew and confesses the business arrangement in front of everyone--including the immigration officer handling their case. She is then told that she has 24 hours to get back to Canada, and thus goes back to New York to pack her things. Eventually, Andrew shows up at the office and confesses his love for her in front of the entire office staff, proposing marriage all over again.
