Sitting in the same room as your rival at the Oscars must be an awkward situation in itself, but what happens when that rival is your ex-husband or ex-wife?
Luckily for James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow, that’s not an issue. The divorced directors have been pitted against each other at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards on March 7 with their respective films (Avatar and The Hurt Locker) both up for the Best Picture award, but since separating in 2001 after just two years together, they've managed to remain friends. And according to news reports, James has admitted that he thinks his film Avatar won’t take this top honour but hopes that his ex-wife’s film, The Hurt Locker, does. He tells Empire magazine, “The Hurt Locker is a very, very strong picture. Of the contenders, it's definitely the strongest. Certainly it's Kathryn's moment. I would happily lose to her. I've already got one of those damn statues. I'd be p**sed off if somebody else won, but I wouldn't mind if she won.”
